Curtis Sliwa, the long-time talk radio host and founder of the Guardian Angels, a non-profit volunteer organization focused on unarmed crime prevention famous for its red berets, is projected to win the Republican nomination for Mayor of New York, beating out his opponent, Fernando Mateo.
The Associated Press reported moments ago that Sliwa won the race, with the latest poll results showing he beat Mateo by over 30 points, winning 69.06% of the vote to Mateo’s 26.95%. Sliwa, who promises voters to be tough on crime, was recently buoyed by the support of former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani.
At press, Sliwa has yet to make an appearance at his campaign’s watch party, but thanked his supporters less than an hour ago via Twitter. “The results are looking great so far,” wrote Sliwa. “I want to thank all of my amazing supporters.” Sliwa added, “Once we have final results, I will be making an announcement shortly!”

Sliwa founded the Guardian Angels in 1979 during one of the most crime ridden epochs of New York history. According to the organization’s website, “the ‘Magnificent 13’ rode the subways to conduct safety patrol. For 37 years, thousands of people have joined the Guardian Angels and created chapters in over 130 cities in 13 countries to protect their communities and improve substantially the quality of life.”
National File recently reported on an interview in which Sliwa’s opponent, Mateo, referred to President Donald Trump as “arrogant”, seemed to signal his support for open borders immigration policies, and praised the mass amnesty that Republicans favored in the 1980s, all seemingly contradicting his promise to support President Trump’s America First agenda. “You know what? I knew that Donald Trump had issues… He had bad issues and he had good issues,” said Mateo. “The good issues were the economy, he kept us out of a war, you know he basically helped the brown and black people probably more than any other president that I know of, but you know what? He was arrogant. He didn’t have humility. He was not a president for all the people. But you know what, that’s that. New York City is my life man.”
National File also reported that Mateo paid a longtime Democrat political consultant and lawyer who referred to President Trump as a “traitor” and Gen. Mike Flynn as a “fascist” among many other derogatory terms. While Sliwa was endorsed by many prominent Republicans, including the New York Young Republicans club and its founder Gavin Wax, Mateo’s only endorsement came from Flynn.
