A video showing a Chinatown worker stepping on fish at a stall has gone viral again amid the coronavirus panic which has prompted several progressive and internationalist voices to call for quelling a nascent anti-Chinese sentiment over the deadly disease’s origin.
Since the the rise of the fatal COVID-19, many videos had circulated social media shining the spotlight on some unorthodox culinary habits of some Chinese individuals.
These included eating non-domesticated animals such as bats, mice, and extended to consuming live animals–raw.
Many of the animals eaten raw were seafood and in one shocking video, tadpoles.
In the embedded video below, a worker is seen standing on fish for sale while wearing winter boots, to the disgust of several social media users.
It appears as if the worker is attempting fix a circuit breaker above the stall.
The woman filming the video asks the worker: “seriously, you’re gonna stand there on the food with your boots?”
The worker argued that they had washed their boots before standing in the fish, before scraping it next to some fish.
“Oh you wash it, so it’s OK?” she responded. “Now you gonna kick it?”
A bystander referred to the worker’s actions as “terrible.”

According to the New York Post, the stomach-churning footage was captured at the Hung Kee Food Market on Canal Street–a Chinatown fish market in Manhattan.
When the video was originally posted to social media, it had garnered millions of views in very little time.
People had advised potential customers not to shop there after the incident drew a question mark over the market’s hygiene standards.
