On Sunday the announcement was made by Governor Andrew Cuomo of the New-York woman in her thirties was confirmed as the first case of coronavirus in Manhattan after returning from an international trip to Iran, as reported by a New York state official.
“The patient, a woman in her late thirties, contracted the virus while traveling abroad in Iran, and is currently isolated in her home,” Cuomo said in the statement. “As I said from the beginning, it was a matter of when, not if there would be a positive case of novel coronavirus in New York.”
As of today in the United States of America, there are 100 confirmed cases of coronavirus, and six deaths that all happened in Washington State. The U.S. surgeon general, Jerome Adams, reminds people not to panic.
“We should be cautious and take appropriate measures to prepare and protect ourselves, but we should not be afraid,” Adams said. “We’ve been through this before, and no place in the world is better prepared to handle this challenge.”
According to a statement made by Vice President Mike Pence on Monday, the outbreak is mostly transmitted from those who have traveled back from international locations rather than in out own nation.
Some schools in the United States have shut down in order to manage the spread of COVID-19, while some others are even considering transitioning to some kind of online learning platform if there is to be a future more pressing risk of this virus spreading among the country.
Other than in New York City, new infections have been reported on California, Illinois, Rhode Island, and Florida as of this past Monday night.
Dan Domenech, executive director of the American Association of School Administrators says, “Last week I saw some districts had sent out messages to families that were pretty mild — like, there’s not much to be concerned about, this may not happen. That’s not happening anymore. Now it’s absolutely something to worry about and it’s absolutely going to happen, it’s just a matter of when.”
The reaction from schools and health officials has been varied. There is still a great deal of uncertainty concerning how far the virus will spread. This makes management of parents concerns difficult as school leaders attempt to maintain calmness in people while being prepared and cautious when it comes to the safety of their students.
