A recent report offered a rare insight into the bleak reality of the situation in the Donbas, where an American volunteer tells ABC News that when a Ukrainian soldier arrives on the frontlines in Bakhmut, his life expectancy is only “around four hours.”
The battle in and around the Donbas city of Bakhmut is being described as a “meat grinder,” where the life expectancy of Ukrainian soldiers is a mere four hours, according to Troy Offenbecker, an American Marine Corps veteran who’s fighting in Ukraine’s International Legion. Offenbecker’s statement on the grim reality facing the armed forces of Ukraine was made to ABC and featured in a recent Newsweek report.
The report stands out among others published by media outlets based in NATO nations, which have toed the line in favor of Ukraine, and have refused to report on their massive battlefield losses as America’s government and its allies continue dumping money and weapons into a proxy war against Russia.
A flashpoint in the war where both sides have begun throwing massive amounts of troops, Bakhmut is part of the Donbas region that seceded from Ukraine in 2014, after a Soros-backed revolution overthrew its elected government. The city was captured by Ukrainian forces during a 2014 ground offensive against the breakaway Donetsk People’s Republic.
Known as Artyomovsk until 2016, its name was changed to Bakhmut as the Ukrainian government led an effort to remove cultural and geographical references to Ukraine’s Russian origins.
The intense fighting around Bakhmut has drawn comparisons to World War 1, as the city has been reduced to rubble and soldiers have taken to brutal trench warfare.
As things currently stand, the Russians are reportedly on the verge of fully encircling the city, though online Ukrainian fan accounts and Western war advocates are continuing to call for more American weapons to be sent to the area, and more young Ukrainian men to be thrown into the “meat grinder.”

In a recent CNN interview, a high-ranking Ukrainian officer let slip the scale of American involvement in the battle for Bakhmut, which if lost by Ukraine, will mark a monumental defeat and a crippling blow to the forces Ukraine has positioned in the Donbas.
According to the officer, American and NATO intelligence agencies are directing Ukrainian assaults on Russian forces with “pinpoint accuracy.”
“Ukraine is getting real-time data exchanges with the Americans, and the US is basically helping Ukraine to pinpoint targets,” a CNN correspondent who spoke with the officer reported.
