Derrick Evans, a former state congressman for West Virginia’s House of Delegates, lambasted U.S. House Rep. Kevin McCarthy (D-CA) in a response to a statement made by the incumbent House Minority Leader on Saturday. Evans was released from federal prison in Washington D.C. — which has been referred to by civil rights activists as “the Biden gulag” on October 21.
“Oh yeah? What are you currently doing for those of us arrested for peacefully exercising our free speech on #J6,” Evans said of McCarthy’s pledges to hold leftists accountable. “I’m finally home from prison but my fellow Patriots are still locked up while you and the RINOs do NOTHING.”
“You Tweet a big game….I’ll actually do something,” Evans added.
Evans believes that McCarthy’s promises cannot be taken seriously and doubts he will be able to push back on leftist civil rights abuses targeting Trump and his supporters. “Through coercion, coordination, and influence, the federal government has used Twitter and other big tech as its stick to silence speech it doesn’t like,” McCarthy said in a statement published on Saturday. “We will bring accountability. And Americans’ free speech will be protected.”

Evans was sentenced on June 22nd, 2022 by the Reagan-appointed federal judge with the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, Royce C. Lamberth, to three months incarceration followed by three years of supervise release. He was also subject to a $2,000 fine and $2,000 in restitution.
In the criminal case, United States v. Derrick Evans (No. 21-cr-337), Evans pleaded guilty to Impeding, Obstructing, or Interfering with Law Enforcement During A Civil Disorder.

“A prime example of the lack of due process is striking in the case of non-violent Jonathan Mellis who has been held for more than 430 days without even a bond hearing,” the non-profit research group Look Ahead America said. “In comparison, in 1979 a hostile Iranian regime held, and then released, 52 American hostages for 444 days.”
Nearly two years after January 6th, 2021, people are still being arrested for attending the protest, even if they were ushered into the building by the U.S. Capitol Police.
