Rep. Ilhan Omar described the September 11 terrorist attacks as “some people did something” when speaking at an event for the Council on American Islamic Relations.
Earlier this year, Omar spoke before CAIR, and made insensitive remarks that set the news cycle ablaze when she told Muslim Americans to “raise hell” and “make people uncomfortable” and appeared to minimize the devastating September 11 terrorist attacks.
Omar began her remarks by saying, “CAIR was founded after 9/11, because they recognized that some people did something,” then claimed that all Muslim Americans were losing their civil liberties.
“So to me, I say raise hell, make people uncomfortable,” said Omar. “Because here’s the truth, here’s the truth, far too long we have lived with the discomfort of being a second class citizen, and frankly I’m tired of it, and every single Muslim in this country should be tired of it.”
The remarks were delivered in April, just a few short months after Omar was sworn into the House of Representatives on a Koran.
Omar also suggested Muslim Americans confront other Americans who are “looking at [them] strange,” demanding they make Americans address what she views as anti-Muslim sentiments.
The freshman congressman also blamed President Donald Trump for what she views as the current plight of Muslim Americans.
“Many of us knew that this was going to get worse,” said Omar. “We finally have a leader, a world leader, in the White House, who publicly says that Islam hates us, who fuels hate against Muslims.”
She went on to say that President Trump is someone “Who thinks it is okay, it is okay to speak about a faith and a whole community in a way that is dehumanizing, vilifying, and doesn’t understand or at least makes us want to think that he doesn’t understand the consequences that his words may have.”
Omar went on, “Some people like me know that he understands the consequences.”
Later in the year, allegations would break that Omar illegally married her brother to skirt immigration laws. More recently, more allegations were reported suggesting Omar engaged in an extramarital affair, cheating on her current husband with a man who received money from her congressional campaign.
