The University of Massachusetts Minutemen football team will celebrate gay pride during their upcoming October 8th home game against the Liberty Flames of Virginia’s evangelical Liberty University. Founded by famed evangelist Jerry Falwell, Liberty is one of the largest Christian universities in the world and a frequent target of the openly anti-Christian left. Despite this, the school boasts a successful Division 1 football program, which is far more than UMass can say for itself.
According to a “special announcement” made to social media by UMass Football’s verified account, the “game vs. Liberty on October 8 will be #PrideDay.” Included in the post are several rainbow flag emojis and a link to purchase tickets.
The post also included a bizarre video that has been thoroughly mocked by online commenters. In the clip, a UMass football player wearing his full uniform dances around a rainbow-lit gay pride room. While he dances around the gay pride room, the UMass player wears a very visible cross necklace.
Commenters have speculated that the cross’s appearance in the video was a deliberate dig at Liberty’s Christian religious affiliation.
UMass has faced sharp criticism for scheduling their pride day celebration for their game against Liberty, as the entire thing appears to have been set up as a massive, deliberate slap in the face of Christians, though the school’s athletic department is stating that the scheduling is a coincidence.
Either way, the UMass athletic director has hailed the pride day football game as a way to show off how “diverse and inclusive” the school is.
“This is very important to us, and we are going to highlight and celebrate all the magnificent ways that our campus is diverse and inclusive,” says UMass athletic director Ryan Bamford.
