A Texas teacher has hit out at parents after a number of complaints emerged after it was revealed that a drag queen had visited their children’s school.
Following the rise in drag queen story hours cropping up across America’s public libraries–largely at taxpayer’s expense–according to the Texas Record, schools have now become venues for drag queen performances of a watered-down nature.
At the Willis Independent School District, an adult performer by the stage name “Lynn Adonis” spent the day with children, causing a stir among parents.
Adonis, working out of Houston, was invited by the school’s cosmetology department.
Adonis traded social media contacts with many of the students.
The school’s Principal, Stephanie Hodgins, had defended the decision to allow the adult performer to speak on school grounds, at a board meeting.
English teacher at Willis High School, Anthony Lane, defended the performer, hitting out at parents over how he believed children should be raised by the wider community–not solely by the parents, alone.
“I believe that raising a child is the responsibility of the community and that parents should not have the final say,” said Lane. “Let’s be honest, some of you don’t know what is best for your kids.”
In response to the ensuing backlash from incensed and alarmed parents, Lane took to Facebook to vent his views: “I have what may be a strange view when it comes to ‘parental rights’ and education being viewed as a customer service industry.
“Our society is often very sensitive when it comes to [criticizing] parents, and teachers are often afraid of parents because they are given so much authority.”
Lane continued, “Parents believe they should be able to storm the school in the name of political and religious beliefs if something happens in the school that they are morally opposed to. They forget that we make a promise to prepare their children to live in a diverse world. We are not required to protect the misguided, bigoted views of their parents.”
The post, which has now been deleted, added fuel to the fire, with parents calling for Lane to be sacked.
Houston drag queen story hour performers sparked controversy after it was discovered that two performers had been convicted of child sex crimes.
