The Los Angeles City Council’s first Latina President has resigned after a racist rant she made in 2021 was leaked online. In the recording, Democrat Nury Martinez slammed L.A.’s Soros-funded prosecutor George Gascon for being “with the blacks,” and called the black son of another Democrat councilmember a “little monkey.”
Now-former Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez made the comments in a conversation with fellow Democrat councilmembers and a union boss. After an audio recording of the conversation was leaked online and published by the L.A. Times, Martinez was quickly labeled a racist and bowed to calls for her resignation.
“Fuck that guy,” Martinez said of L.A.’s Soros-funded, BLM-aligned District Attorney George Gascon. “He’s with the blacks,” Martinez said.
In the leaked audio, Martinez also lamented gay Democrat councilmember, Mike Bonin. Together with his husband, Bonin adopted a black child, who Martinez accuses Bonin of using as an “accessory” and refers to as a “little monkey.”
“There’s this white guy, with his little black kid who’s misbehaved,” Martinez said, recounting a time she rode on a float with him in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade before switching the conversation over to Spanish and calling the boy “ese changuito,” meaning “that little monkey.”
Martinez went on to accuse Bonin of raising the child like a “little white kid” and claimed that the boy needed to be physically abused as a result.
“They’re raising him like a little white kid, which, I was like, this kid needs a beatdown.”
Far from leaving the conversation to racial insults, Martinez also discussed the racial gerrymandering of city council districts in the recorded conversation.
Prior to the audio leak, Martinez was nationally celebrated as the first Latina President of the Los Angeles City Council and frequently used her Hispanic minority status as a political device. She’s been known to hound Republicans with accusations of racism, including President Trump.
Now though, Martinez is the one being called a racist on the national stage, with actual evidence to back it up. Along with Martinez, Democrat Councilmembers Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo were involved in the leaked conversation with the union boss, and are facing calls of their own to resign.
“I take responsibility for what I said and there are no excuses for those comments. I’m so sorry,” Martinez said in a public statement announcing her resignation and insisting that she’s not a racist.
“As someone who believes deeply in the empowerment of communities of color, I recognize my comments undercut that goal,” Martinez went on to say in her statement.
“Going forward, reconciliation will be my priority. I have already reached out to many of my Black colleagues and other Black leaders to express my regret in order for us to heal.”
