A man who was in coronavirus quarantine reportedly stripped naked before running into a street and biting an elderly woman to death.
The Tamil man, known locally as Manikandan, had recently flown from Sri Lanka to India and had been ordered to observe a 14-day quarantine in isolation shortly after arriving.
The Daily Star reported that the anxious thirty-five-year-old man ripped off his clothes after a week of isolation before sprinting into a street in Tamil Nadu where he spotted an elderly woman sleeping outside her home.
Manikandan, who had previously suffered from mental illness, then hurriedly approached her, biting down on her neck.
The hard bite awoke his eighty-year-old victim, who screamed loudly, edging her unclad attacker to flee the scene.
Family members rushed the elderly lady to hospital, but, despite doctors’ best efforts, she succumbed to her injuries.
Following the incident, an angry mob congregated to track down the naked assailant.
When Manikandan was caught, he was turned over to the authorities where he will be charged with murder.
A police statement said:
“The accused, Manikandan, has a history of mental illness for which he was treated in Madurai back in 2010.
“On Friday, he disrobed himself and ran from his home. He tripped and fell a hundred metres from his home and targeted the elderly woman, who was sitting outside her house.
“According to the man’s family, ever since Manikandan returned from Sri Lanka, he was stressed about losses his business suffered there and his mental health deteriorated.”
The coronavirus pandemic has prompted India to quarantine their population, which numbers over a billion people.
Those who fail to adhere to the lockdown will face severe punishment–something which has been enforced across several countries hit by the pandemic.
