The Washington Post and a reported group of GOP “megadonors” are pushing Virginia GOP Governor Glenn Youngkin for President in 2024, with the notoriously left-wing publication claiming that Youngkin, who they describe as a “sane Republican,” is needed in ’24 as an “alternative” to 45th President Trump, who is expected to announce a run of his own.
“Youngkin” trended on Twitter following a Washington Post op-ed written by longtime left-wing establishment columnist Karen Tumulty and another article from The Post made in the days prior, announcing that Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin had met with a group of GOP megadonors in New York City. As Virginia Governors are barred from serving consecutive terms, The Post and others have suggested that the meeting signals that Youngkin is mulling a run for President in 2024.
“Gov. Glenn Youngkin flew to New York last week to meet privately with GOP megadonors in Manhattan, a move that underscores recent hints that the Republican is considering a run for president in 2024,” The Post reported on June 29th. As mentioned in that report, Governor Youngkin is scheduled to travel to Nebraska to headline his first out-of-state political event since taking office and, recently indicated to Fox News’s Brian Kilmeade, that he may be considering a run for the presidency.

“Someone must test the proposition that there are still enough sane Republicans out there to create a path to the nomination for a candidate who offers himself as an alternative, rather than an amplification, of the worst aspects of Trumpism,” wrote The Washington Post’s Karen Tumulty in an op-ed that followed the megadonor report, proclaiming that “Glenn Youngkin – or someone like him – must run in 2024.”
“What we’ve seen so far – and it is early – suggests that former President Donald Trump himself is determined to run in 2024,” Tumulty went on to say, seeming to admit in the piece that while she dislikes many of Youngkin’s policies, she dislikes Trump even more. “We also know he stands a strong chance of winning the Republican nomination and a reasonable one, God forbid, of returning to the White House,” she went on, explaining that her support for an alternative GOP candidate rests on her desire to destroy Donald Trump and the America First movement.

National File reached out to Governor Youngkin’s office for comment on this story asking whether or not there was any validity to the claims that he would seek the GOP nomination for President as an alternative to Trump but received no response by the time of publishing.
According to recent polling data, Governor Youngkin’s approval rating among Virginians leads that of Joe Biden by a large margin. Of those surveyed by Roanoke College, 53% approve of the job Youngkin is doing, compared to just 37% for Joe Biden.
