Freedom Caucus Rep. Bob Good (VA-5) has spoken out against GOP establishment leader Kevin McCarthy’s candidacy for Speaker of the House, blasting his failures as Minority Leader and throwing his support behind a fellow Freedom Caucus member, Rep. Andy Biggs.
Rep. Good announced his support for Andy Biggs (AZ-5) as Speaker of the House in a Newsmax interview with Sean Spicer, ripping the failures of Kevin McCarthy and the GOP establishment as a disservice to the American People.
Good told Spicer that he refuses to “go along with the same leadership team” that has given Congress a “top-down leadership system,” locking the American people out of the legislative process and stopping real governmental reform from taking place.
“We can’t just be Democrat-light,” Rep. Good said. “We can’t just be not as bad as the Democrats.”
“And to go with the same leadership team and the same status quo that we’ve had in place over the last couple of years, I think doesn’t represent the will of the American People.”
Throughout the interview, Spicer, the former White House and RNC press secretary, argued staunchly in favor of Kevin McCarthy becoming the next Speaker of the House.
Much like other supporters of McCarthy, Spicer claimed that if Republicans don’t unite behind the embattled establishment leader immediately, a Democrat will become Speaker when the official vote is held in Congress in January.

A candidate for Speaker must receive at least 218 votes to assume command of the gavel, and Rep. Good says it’s “clear” that Kevin McCarthy doesn’t have that support.
The statement from Rep. Good echoed a previous comment made by a spokesman for Rep. Andy Biggs, who told the Wall Street Journal that “McCarthy doesn’t have 218 [votes], and there will be an alternative challenger.”
On Monday, Biggs announced that he’s running for Speaker. In the run-up to his announcement, he made several public remarks against the coronation of Kevin McCarthy, with Biggs saying that there needs to be a more public debate and discussion around who holds the very important office.

In addition to Rep. Andy Biggs, any number of people could be voted Speaker of the House when the official vote is held in January. If Conservatives are able to hold off Kevin McCarthy at Tuesday’s internal leadership vote, many doors could be opened.
According to an internal Freedom Caucus memo that was exclusively published by National File, conservative members of Congress are considering President Trump for the role of Speaker, and have put together detailed, Constitutionally–backed plans for how they can make it happen.

Meanwhile, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has endorsed McCarthy for Speaker, using the same talking points as Sean Spicer to sell her endorsement.
Her supporters have blasted the move, with MTG having previously supported President Trump for the position. She also claimed she’d impeach Joe Biden after a Republican majority takes control of Congress, but McCarthy has vowed not to impeach him should he become the next Speaker of the House.
