Three-time NBA champion and four-time NBA champion Steph Curry, who supported President Biden in 2020 and has championed numerous leftist causes, petitioned local officials in an effort to prevent “low income” housing from being built near his mansion in Atherton, California.
“We hesitate to add to the ‘not in our backyard’ (literally) rhetoric, but we wanted to send a note before today’s meeting. Safety and privacy for us and our kids continues to be our top priority and one of the biggest reasons we chose Atherton as home,” the Golden State Warriors point-guard, along with his wife, Ayesha Curry, wrote in a letter to Atherton officials.
According to Forbes, Curry was the fifth highest-paid athlete in the world last year. Atherton, is one of the most exclusive communities in the U.S., with Forbes ranking it as the “most expensive” zip code in the country this year.
The low income housing plan has been met with opposition from some Atherton residents and officials. Council member Rick DeGolia has reportedly said that “it’s not possible to build low-income housing in Atherton since land is worth about $8 million per acre.”
According to Fox News, the Curry family also urged local officials to build fencing and shrubbery around their home to block out the proposed developments. “Should that not be sufficient for the state, we ask that the town commits to investing in considerably taller fencing and landscaping to block sight lines onto our family’s property.”
Curry’s opposition to low-income housing deviates from the politics he has pushed with his massive profile. In 2020, he endorsed Joe Biden at the Democratic National Convention. In a speech endorsing then-candidate Biden, the NBA’s all-time three-point shooting leader referenced “racial inequality” and “social injustices.”
