In an article for the institute that carries his name, Ron Paul, the former Republican presidential hopeful and long time Congressman, questioned whether the impeachment of President Trump was truly driven by politics, or whether the deep state and intelligence services were behind it all.
Last week, Nancy Pelosi, the Democrat leader of the House announced they were beginning impeachment proceedings against President Trump for apparently coercing Ukrainian President Zelenskyy into investigating former Vice President Joe Biden. This is despite the fact that the transcript of the phone call shows the President did nothing wrong.

Former Representative Ron Paul (R-Texas) wrote on Monday that while those furious at the Hillary Clinton’s loss in 2016 may be the “driving force” of impeachment, “at every turn, we see the fingerprints of the CIA and its allies in the US deep state.”
Paul noted that both a former director and former acting director of the CIA had accused President Trump of treasonous behavior. Former acting director Mike Mundell said in 2016 that the Trump was an “agent of the Russian federation,” and former director John Brennan said that the President was “in the pocket of Putin,” and that “patriotic” Republicans should act against him.
He added that it was no surprise that Brennan and other “deep state counterparts,” James Comey of the FBI and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper used “the fake Steele dossier to spy” on President Trump’s 2016 campaign.

He said that it was “strange” that rules for CIA whistleblowing were changed, that allowed the apparent “whistleblower” to not need first hand knowledge of any wrongdoing, a concern the President echoed in a tweet:
WHO CHANGED THE LONG STANDING WHISTLEBLOWER RULES JUST BEFORE SUBMITTAL OF THE FAKE WHISTLEBLOWER REPORT? DRAIN THE SWAMP!

Paul also argued that the Democrats were a lttle too quick to jump on board the freedom of information train:
The Democrats have suddenly come out in praise of whistleblowers – well not exactly. Pelosi still wants to prosecute actual whistleblower Ed Snowden. But she’s singing the praises of this fake CIA “whistleblower.” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer once warned Trump that if “you take on the intelligence community, they have six ways from Sunday at getting back at you.” It’s hard not to ask whether this is a genuine impeachment effort…or a CIA coup!
