Vice President Kamala Harris spoke with Lester Holt about the Biden administration’s seeming indifference about millions of illegal immigrants flocking to the United States, only to be either released or held seemingly indefinitely in extremely overcrowded conditions. In response, she laughed repeatedly, and suggested she did not see the importance of her or Biden’s physical presence at the border.
Holt began,, “Do you have any plans to visit the border?” In response, Harris offered a stuttering response, in which she claimed she had, in fact, been to the border. “I’ve, at some point, you know, it, we are going to the border, we’ve been to the border, so this whole thing about the border, we’ve been to the border”
“You haven’t been to the border,” Holt shot back, provoking laughter from Harris, who seemed confused about being confronted over such an obvious characterization of the truth. “And I haven’t been to Europe,” she said, laughing. “I mean, I don’t understand the point that you’re making. I’m not discounting the importance of the border.”
Holt noted that both Republicans and Democrats have called for Harris and Biden to visit the border to better understand the crisis, “I know Republicans have certainly come at you on this,” said Holt, “but Democratic Congressman Cuellar has a broder district, has said to you and the president, ‘Come, you need to see this.'” In response, Harris briefly shot back, “I care about the border.”
The Biden administration’s seeming indifference to the border crisis may already be having consequences electorally. The Texas border town of McAllen, which is over 85% Hispanic and is a key part of the Biden administration’s illegal immigration pipeline, recently elected a Republican mayor candidate. National File reported, “Lawyer and city commissioner Villalobos defeated Veronica Vela Whitacre, the McAllen mayor pro tem. Villalobos won approximately 51 percent of the vote, winning the election by 206 votes. Javier Villalobos has stressed the need to keep McAllen safe from migrant crime, saying, ‘Look, our concern is public safety. We don’t want them to get hurt, and we definitely don’t want them to hurt any of our residents. If you don’t have control, you’re going to have violence, you will have burglaries, you will have thefts, you will have other things that I don’t even want to talk about.'”
