President Trump is apparently infuriated by Mike Pence, who the President thinks is “not fighting hard enough” for him and election integrity.
In a report from Axios, White House sources reveal that President Trump is notably angry with many of his supposed “allies” who are not fighting the good fight to defend election integrity, most notably Vice President Pence.
The President allegedly brought up an ad from the Never Trump group, the Lincoln Project, which claims that Pence is “backing away” from him. According to the sources, Trump believes Pence is “not fighting hard enough” – in the Vice President’s case, he has not made any public comments on election integrity since the election.
Pence has been focused on anything but the election, including spending time campaigning down in Georgia, focusing on the pro-life policies of the administration, and working on the production of the coronavirus vaccine as the head of the coronavirus task force.
The Vice President has also planned a trip to Israel, Bahrain, and Poland, with a departure date set for January 6th, the same day that he is meant to chair a joint session of Congress and tabulate and verify the Electoral College votes. One Pence ally told Politico that the timing of the trip is “anything but coincidental.”
If nothing was done on election integrity, Pence would be the one to certify Biden as the 46th President of the United States. This role that Pence will take in the certification of the Electoral College votes has apparently “begun to loom large” in the President’s mind. “Trump would view Pence… validating the election result as the ultimate betrayal,” Axios noted.
However, while the Vice President could be the one to put the final nail in Trump’s coffin, he may also hold the key to his survival, a draft White House memo obtained by National File argues. In the memo, Trump allies reveal that Pence not only has the power to reject Electoral College votes from states that violated the Constitution, but is “duty bound” to do so.
The drafters of this White House memo believe that the federal check to the states’ elections resides with Vice President Mike Pence in his role as President of the Senate. Additionally, Pence has the sole power determine whether to reject impermissible states of electors. The revelation that Pence alone can reject allegedly fraudulent Electoral College certificates shifts the spotlight from President Trump and Congressional leaders significantly by putting President Trump’s electoral destiny squarely on Pence’s shoulders.
