According to a new Rasmussen poll, a majority of self-identified Democrats prioritize the border security of Ukraine over their own. The poll also gauged opinion on other topics relating to the conflict, such as Biden’s overall handling of the crisis. A majority of respondents graded Biden’s response poorly.
Rasmussen asked 1,000 likely voters, “which do you consider more important to America’s national interest: Defending Ukraine against Russian invasion, or defending the U.S. border against illegal immigration?” While 53% of overall chose defending the U.S. border, a majority of self-styled liberals Democrats chose the other option. According to the poll, 57% of Democrats chose Ukraine’s border over the U.S. border. Additionally, 67% of self-styled “liberals” also chose Ukraine.
This is in stark contrast to respondents who identified as Republican or independent. 74% of Republicans chose U.S. border security, as did 54% of independents.
As for Biden’s handling of the crisis, 64% of respondents rated Biden’s handling of the conflict fair to poor. An equal amount said his “handling” of national security issues was fair to poor, the Washington Examiner reports. Grading Biden’s handling as “poor” gained a plurality of the vote at 49%, while just 31% of respondents said Biden was doing “excellent” or “good.”
A separate Rasmussen poll found that Americans firmly oppose military intervention in the conflict. According to a January 26 poll, just 31% of likely voters support sending combat troops to Ukraine.
The Pentagon has repeatedly stated that no American troops will be fighting in Ukraine. However, some politicians and national security figures have argued for the establishment of a “no fly zone”, which would require NATO pilots to engage Russian military targets. Such a measure would lead to a full-scale war with Russia, according to both NATO military leaders and the Russian government.
