New York law enforcement and government officials provided updates on a Brooklyn subway attack during a press conference Tuesday. According to New York Governor Kathy Hochul, the suspected gunman is still on the loose. At least 16 people are confirmed injured as of this time, including 10 who sustained gunshot wounds.

Of the 16 confirmed injuries, at least eight have been reported to be in “stable” condition. No fatalities have been reported at this time, mostly thanks to medically trained civilians who immediately provided aid to the victims, according to reports and witness videos.

Police commissioner Keechant Sewell told reporters that a man aboard a Manhattan-bound train donned what she called a gas mask and produced a canister from a bag, which he opened to fill the car with smoke. The suspect then opened fire with an unidentified gun while the train was pulling into the 36th Street Station in Brooklyn. Sewell added that investigators do not “suspect terrorism at this time”, though they are not ruling it out.

Additionally, the police commissioner elaborated on earlier reports of undetonated explosive devices. “There are “currently no known explosive devices on our subway trains,” Sewell told reporters.

Officials said gunfire wounded at least 10 people, and at least 16 in all were injured in the attack that began on an NYC subway train that pulled into a Brooklyn station. Sewell said police are searching for a black male suspect of “medium height” and a “large build.” The suspected gunman, who is still on the loose, was wearing a green construction-like vest and a gray sweatshirt. A massive manhunt involving NYPD, federal and New York State law enforcement is currently underway.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul used the press conference to call for a crackdown on guns. “No more gun violence,” Hochul said. “We are sick and tired of reading about crime.”

As of this time, officials have not made a positive identification of the suspect.
