Upon the release of the news of the FBI raid of former President Donald Trump’s home in Florida, political figures from across the spectrum have chimed in with their two cents. Many figures, even some on the political left, were quick to point out the unprecedented nature of a currently unpopular administration using its law enforcement arm to raid the private residence of a former President. Many echoed the former President’s sentiment that America is descending into third world levels of corruption.
While many Republicans were quick to condemn the acts of the Biden DOJ and FBI, some didn’t seem to grasp the significance of the situation. Particularly significant examples of this came from some Senate Republicans.
It's been 15 hours since we learned the FBI raided President Trump's private home. If you turn to @LeaderMcConnell @SenJohnThune @SenJohnBarrasso @SenJoniErnst, however, they're just talking about tax cuts. There's no better encapsulation of the weakness of Senate GOP leadership. pic.twitter.com/WQQzMmYG6t

Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) was one of the few who initially pointed out how this particular situation was not just “politics as usual,” but that a line had been crossed.
The only member of GOP Senate leadership speaking out is @SenRickScott , who earned the fury of McConnell earlier this year for being the only one who dared to put forth an agenda for a majority. Hard to find leaders less capable of handling these times than McConnell & his pals. pic.twitter.com/an8ASdq2BI

Conservative activist Christopher Bedford also illustrated in his thread that the disgraced former Democratic Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, was quicker to speak out on the matter than Senate Republicans largely were.
Let it be known throughout the land from sea to sea that @andrewcuomo was quicker to speak out on this insanity than Senate Republican leadership. pic.twitter.com/fB20nCELnZ

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) took to CBS Mornings to speak about the raid, where he urged Americans to let the investigation “play out.”
Critics were quick to point out that letting this investigation “play out” gives a weaponized DOJ and FBI cover to investigate and harass others who openly oppose the regime. After letting Russiagate and other now-debunked “scandals” run their course, many on the right are tired of this refrain.
“We should let it play out.” Sen. Tim Scott on the FBI raid of Mar-a-Lago. Are you joking??? pic.twitter.com/EAwnhl3zdB

Many Republicans, particularly those in the Senate, have drawn criticism from Trump’s base on many major issues going back to Trump’s presidency. Since Trump has been out of the White House, virtually no Republican Senators have sought to carry on Trump’s America First policy agenda, and have often shown that they’ll prioritize pet projects that have little to do with supporting the cultural and economic interests of their voter base. Rather, GOP leadership has gone all in funding Ukraine’s war effort, and in many cases have voted along with Democrats to increase the size and power of the federal government.
