Kevin McCarthy’s ouster from the speakership of the U.S. House of Representatives marks an historic triumph of the American citizenry. For the first time ever, a motion to vacate compelled a speaker to leave the speakership. 8 Republicans banded together against McCarthy in concert with all Democrats. Now, all of Congress has a vacation until Monday. Now, their routine of treachery has been interrupted and they will have to actually listen to the people’s concerns, with Matt Gaetz of Florida leading the people’s caucus of 8 hardliners.
Gaetz possesses leverage and the House GOP establishment has no clear leadership. What will happen? Hopefully, the American people will come together to hold politicians accountable and not get hoodwinked by another establishment speaker or another terrible budget after the current 45-day emergency budget expires.
Why wouldn’t McCarthy answer the voices of the people during his Nixonian exit? A pathetic hanger-on of the progressive corporatist establishment, McCarthy made his bones as a bag man for the Swamp. Will Frank Luntz’s former roommate try to steer the gavel to some other wolf in sheep’s clothing, or will the people rally around a new contender? President Donald Trump said that he is willing to serve as House speaker. While Jim Jordan is already a popular speaker candidate it is important to remember that Jim Jordan has been backing McCarthy. Why? The process is just getting started and there are lots of possibilities. Clearly, the people deserve the right to set an agenda for the next speaker, or just prevent the Swamp from even picking a new speaker for a while.
