The current Lt. Governor and Democratic candidate for Senate in Pennsylvania, John Fetterman, has been under fire recently for traveling to the Jersey shore in 2020. In the summer of 2020, while Lt. Governor Fetterman was preaching about social responsibility and the need to stay inside and quarantine, he decided that he was exempt from these actions.
Not only did John Fetterman exempt himself from the regulations he enforced on others, he actually took his family on a three-day vacation to Ocean City, New Jersey from June 24-27. Due to his position in the state government, he also brought along state police for protection which costed the PA taxpayers $3500 according to the Washington Free Beacon.
During the summer of 2020, The Pennsylvania Department of Health issued multiple guidelines recommending against nonessential travel. Not only did the PA state government issue guidelines against nonessential travel, just days before Fetterman’s travel, there was a spike in cover cases in New Jersey. This prompted Governor Phil Murphy to issue a statement threatening disciplinary action against people coming to the Jersey Shore and not following the covid rules in place.
In May 2020 Murphy said that “renegade” counties in his state had caused Covid-19
outbreaks by breaking the quarantine orders.
Ironically, Fetterman has made carpetbagger accusations against Dr. Mehmet Oz the centerpiece of his campaign. Fetterman has run several ads that accuse Oz of being a New Jersey resident, as the former TV doctor does in fact have a residence in the state.
The Washington Free Beacon could weigh heavy on the current Senate race, as lockdown policies have proven to be quite unpopular throughout the commonwealth. In 2021, Pennsylvania became the first state in the union to take away their governor’s lockdown powers at the ballot box.
