The law enforcement branch of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) posted an advertisement for a job where special agents will be required to “carry a firearm” and “be willing to use deadly force” during “dangerous assignments.”
The Criminal Investigation arm of the IRS posted the advertisement to hire special agents who would take on a controversial workload.
The role’s “major duties” include:
- Adhere to the highest standards of conduct, especially in maintaining honesty and integrity.
- Work a minimum of 50 hours per week, which may include irregular hours, and be on-call 24/7, including holidays and weekends.
- Maintain a level of fitness necessary to effectively respond to life-threatening situations on the job.
- Carry a firearm and be willing to use deadly force, if necessary.
- Be willing and able to participate in arrests, execution of search warrants, and other dangerous assignments
The special agents will “combine” an accounting background with “law enforcement skills to investigate financial crimes.”

These so-called “IRS Special Agents are considered the premier financial investigators for the Federal government,” the IRS job posting reads.
In June, the IRS’ Criminal Investigation division came under fire for its purchase of nearly $700k worth of ammunition.
“Between March 1 and June 1, 2022, the criminal division of the IRS ordered $696,000 in ammunition, the IRS told VERIFY in an email.”

Social media users have expressed outrage over the IRS’ stockpiling of ammunition and its’ role in hiring employees who are prepared to wield deadly force.
“Not sure under what circumstances an IRS Agent would need to use deadly force, because a google search doesn’t find any history of assaults on agents. What it does find is that the public probably needs deadly force protection from the agents,” law enforcement commentator Rob O’Donnell commented on Twitter.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) announced he would co-sponsor a bill with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) to prohibit the IRS from acquiring ammunition.
“Democrats want to take guns away from law-abiding citizens, and arm federal agencies with what they call “weapons of war.” On whom are they planning to wage war? I am cosponsoring @RepMattGaetz‘s HR 8268 to prohibit the IRS from acquiring ammunition,” Massie tweeted.
