A Houston mother and public school teacher has been charged after police say she locked her 13-year-old son in the trunk of her vehicle while they waited to receive a COVID-19 test. The mother said her child was in quarantine.
Police say they were alerted on January 3, after Sarah Beam pulled into a drive-thru COVID test site and a witness reported seeing something move in her trunk.
The witness apparently instructed Beam to open her trunk.
Authorities say that Beam eventually opened the trunk, revealing her 13-year-old son.
“Beam told authorities she put her son in the trunk of her car due to him testing positive for COVID, and to prevent her from getting exposed to the virus while driving him to the site for additional testing,” Houston media reports.
“The witnesses said when she requested to see the child, Beam had to unlatch the trunk of the vehicle, and the child was found lying down inside.”
Apparently still defiant, Beam was told she would not be receive the COVID-19 test she craved until the teen was allowed to leave the confined space.
Beam has apparently worked as a teacher for Cypress Falls High School, and has worked in her current district in 2011.
The school has pulled Beam from the classroom and placed her on administrative leave.
This is the second time this week that a public school employee has made headlines for allegedly acting inappropriately around children because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
National File previously reported that a public school employee in New York had been arrested after she allegedly injected a friend of her son with one of the controversial COVID-19 vaccines without parental permission, or being qualified for such a procedure.
Education continues to be a pressing issue for Republicans, and it seems likely behavior like this will magnify already existing concerns about mandatory masking, Critical Race Theory, and other controversial facets of modern education.
