Every House Democrat voted against the ‘‘Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023’’ on Thursday. House Republicans were still able to pass the bill on a party-line vote. However, Senate Democrats promised to block the bill in the United States Senate. Joe Biden also said he would veto the bill if it reached his desk.
H.R. 734, better known as the “Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023’’ states, “It shall be a violation of subsection (a) for a recipient of Federal financial assistance who operates, sponsors, or facilitates athletic programs or activities to permit a person whose sex is male to participate in an athletic program or activity that is designated for women or girls.”
Before Thursday’s vote, House Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries called the “Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023” extreme writing, “Transgender children simply want to live, make friends, and belong. Instead, they face bullying by Extreme MAGA Republicans in Congress. Voted NO on the cruel right-wing effort to ban kids from sports.”

House Democrats strongly noted Jeffries ‘ statement as not one Democrat in the United States House of Representatives voted yes on the “Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023.”
House Republicans were still able to pass H.R. 734 on a party-line vote. Before today’s vote, Congressman Greg Steube (R-FL), who recently endorsed Donald Trump for president and is H.R. 734’s sponsor, wrote, “Today the U.S. House will vote on my bill, The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. We cannot allow the trans agenda to continue taking away women’s opportunities in athletics. Stay tuned!”

Prior to today’s vote, Joe Biden released a statement saying, ” The Administration strongly opposes House passage of HR 734. If the President were presented with H.R. 734 he would veto it.”
Americans have become enraged over the last few years at viral videos showing male athletes competing in women’s sports and badly defeating the women that they are competing against. Americans are also angry that biological males can accept scholarships to play on women’s teams at most public universities in the United States of America. H.R. 734 would put an end to these practices.
