On Sunday, an armed gunman disguised as a FedEx delivery driver attacked the family of a federal judge who had recently being assigned a case involving Jeffrey Epstein, killing the judge’s son and wounding her husband. Police say Monday that the gunman was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Daniel Anderl, the 20-year-old son of federal judge Esther Salas, was shot and killed during the attack, while Salas’ husband, defense attorney Mark Anderl was critically wounded.
The masked gunman, who appeared at the family residence dressed in a FedEx uniform, fled after the mid-afternoon shooting, and was discovered dead by police on Monday.
Police described the gunman’s cause of death as a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and ABC 7 New York reports that he was believed to have been a lawyer.
Just four days before the attack, Salas was assigned a case involving deceased financier and child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, whose 2019 death in police custody raised eyebrows after being rule a suicide.
The case involves investors in Deutsche Bank, who claim the company “failed to properly monitor customers that the Bank itself deemed to be high risk, including, among others, the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.”
Accusations of money laundering, disclosure control problems, and failure to “flag numerous questionable transactions from accounts associated with Epstein” and various other issues relating to Epstein figure prominently in the case.
