An Arizona Republican U.S. Senate nominee suggested affirmative action is the reason the economy is struggling now.
Blake Masters posted a sarcastic response to a tweet detailing the groundbreaking number of women, Black, and LGBT people working in high-level roles at the Federal Reserve.
“Finally a compelling explanation for why our economy is doing so well,” Masters commented, which led to a trove of angry social media users calling him racist or a bigot.

The Arizona Republican published a short video on Twitter that explained his thoughts on what he described as “Joe Biden’s dysfunctional affirmative action regime.”
Masters implied President Biden chose Kamala Harris as his Vice President because of her gender, not due to her qualifications: “You know, if you want to see the affirmative action regime on display, just look at Biden’s White House. Biden promised that he would choose a woman for his VP. Then of course, he chose Kamala Harris, so incompetent she can’t even get a sentence out. But I’ve never spoken to anyone who can say with a straight face that Kamala was somehow the most qualified candidate for that job.”
The Arizona U.S. Senate candidate went on to criticize identity politics that Democrats are “addicted” to.

Masters stressed that he is not against people of color or LGBT individuals working in high-level roles at the federal reserve. The only caveat he has is that they must be “hired for their competence.”
“I don’t care if every single employee at the Fed is a Black lesbian as long as they’re hired for their competence and not because of what they look like or who they sleep with,” the Trump-endorsed candidate explained.
Speaking on affirmative action, Masters said, “I can’t think of a single policy since the end of Jim Crow that’s been worse or more divisive for race relations in this country.”
