Disgraced actor Alec Baldwin is facing criminal prosecution for involuntary manslaughter after he reportedly held the prop gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the Baldwin-produced Western movie Rust. The film never came to fruition, and Alec Baldwin also held the gun during the shooting of the film’s director Joel Souza, who survived the frenzied on-set melee. Assistant director Dave Halls already plea-bargained down to a “negligent use of a deadly weapon” charge, receiving a suspended sentence, and the movie’s armorer is vowing to expose “the full truth.”
New Mexico district attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies stated that Alec Baldwin and the film’s armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed are going to be charged with involuntary manslaughter, prompting speculation that this announcement could be part of some kind of legal strategy to convince Alec Baldwin to accept a plea deal.
Gutierrez-Reed’s lawyers state: “Hannah is, and has always been, very emotional and sad about this tragic accident. But she did not commit involuntary manslaughter. These charges are the result of a very flawed investigation, and an inaccurate understanding of the full facts. We intend to bring the full truth to light and believe Hannah will be exonerated of wrongdoing by a jury.”
