Joe Biden appeared to live up to his nickname of “Sleepy Joe” during the opening speeches of the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, dozing off before a staffer woke him up.
Throughout his tenure as President, and even beforehand, President Trump derided many of his political opponents with various nicknames ranging in accuracy. It seems however, that his nickname for Joe Biden, “Sleepy Joe,” has once again maintained its relevancy, with Biden appearing to doze off during the opening speeches of the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow.
“This conference is one of the most important meetings in history. You have the chance to make decisions and reach agreements which will affect the lives of generations to come,” the opening speaker declared, while Biden can be seen on video trying desperately to hold his eyes open. “You are in a position of extraordinary power. You can change forever the trajectory we are on. You can make a world that is once again full of hope, not fear,” the speaker continued, as Biden fell asleep, before being woken up by a staffer.

Whilst Biden received a good amount of mocking on social media for falling asleep during the COP26 opening speeches, a number of people also pointed out that anyone normal would also be “bored to sleep” in his situation. Writing in Spectator World, Jacob Heilbrunn said that a charitable interpretation of Biden dozing off was that he was “behaving like any rational human being listening to a bunch of self-important gasbags would and simply tuned out.”

During the COP26 event, the UK’s Prince Charles further called for a “vast military-style campaign to marshal the strength of the global private sector,” using the “trillions at its disposal, far beyond global GDP,” to “fundamental economic transition.”
