McConnell Caves On Debt Ceiling, Will Allow Dems To Push Issue Until New December Deadline

Blaming Democrats for failing to “address the debt limit” in a timely manner, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell claimed Democrats had created another crisis before allowing them to continue doing nothing until December.

In a statement released today, Mitch McConnell blamed Democrats for failing to find unity within their own party in order to increase the debt ceiling. Chiding the Democrat Party for its reckless behavior, McConnell then told the Democrats he would allow them to continue doing nothing only until December of this year.

After restating his position on the debt ceiling crisis, McConnell added, “We will also allow Democrats to use normal procedures to pass an emergency debt limit extension at a fixed dollar amount to cover current spending levels into December.” Like a college professor with a promising slacker student, McConnell added, “This will moot Democrats’ excuses about the time crunch,” and suggested that if they are still unable to formulate a plan, “a more traditional bipartisan governing conversation could be possible.”

McConnell, though vilified by Democrats as an unhinged Republican lunatic obsessed with restricting abortion and decreasing taxes for the wealthy, has been a frequent opponent of President Donald Trump and the Republicans who follow him and a frequent ally to the Biden administration during its tumultuous first year. At the height of the Afghanistan crisis, when talk of impeaching Joe Biden and calls for his resignation were mounting, McConnell threw cold water on the situation. He promised, instead, that he would work to prevent articles of impeachment against Biden from being taken seriously.

McConnell has also repeatedly sparred with President Trump. The 45th President was quick to point out that McConnell has significant financial and family ties to China, though opponents called President Trump racist for daring to note this. President Trump has repeatedly derided McConnell since leaving office. In July, it was revealed he referred to the Republican minority leader as a “knucklehead” and a “stupid person” with no personality during an interview with Vanity Fair. In June he blamed McConnell for Biden’s installation to the White House and said the Republican minority leader “blew it for the country.” In May he blasted McConnell as a “weak, pathetic leader” and earlier this year he called him a “dour, sullen and unsmiling political hack” and the country’s most unpopular politician.
