Republican gubernatorial candidate Don Huffines has released a statement slamming Texas governor Greg Abbott over the latter’s plan to to partially secure the Texas-Mexico border with chain-link fencing, stating that the plan is both “unacceptable and impractical,” and noting that “if Abbott wanted to secure the border he would have done so a long time ago.”
“Greg Abbott stole my campaign’s idea to build a wall along the Texas-Mexico border,” Huffines said in a statement on Tuesday. “Unfortunately, the governor’s plan to build a wall is not sufficient. Abbott claims that he will mostly fund a border wall through donations from conservatives who support the effort. Does he really think that will work? It is never going to get done.”

The statement continued, “Abbott is expecting hard-working conservatives in Texas to pay their taxes – including our ever-increasing property taxes -and then donate even more of their money to build a wall. Additionally, parts of Abbott’s proposed ‘wall’ will be made of chain-linked fencing. His plan is unacceptable and impractical.”
“Abbott has had six years to secure our open border and is only now expressing an interest in taking action because he is facing a serious primary challenger – making his new-found stance on border security politically convenient,” Huffines concluded. “Our campaign has received tremendous momentum and he sees his political power being threatened. Texans are not ignorant. They know if Abbott wanted to secure the border he would have done so a long time ago.”
Abbott has found himself in hot water in recent months over his reluctance to take a strong stance on issues important to Republican voters, and his bizarre and factually inaccurate attacks on free speech platform Gab.
