New court documents reveal the circumstances that led to the death of a Lafayette, Indiana Dimono’s pizza delivery driver and new father to a baby boy, who was shot in a botched armed robbery when he was called to deliver a pizza to the address of an abandoned house.
Joshua Ungersma, 37, was allegedly shot dead by Jaelynn Billups, 17, after Billups and her 19-year-old boyfriend Alberto Vanmeter attempted to rob the pizza delivery driver at gunpoint.
Billups allegedly shot Ungersma dead after he called out for somebody to call 911 after he shot Vanmeter in self-defense after the teenager attempted to rob him. Ungersma had allegedly walked across the Fayetteville street to ask somebody to call the police when Billups walked up to Ungersma and fatally shot him at point blank range.
According to The Daily Mail, police found Ungersma dead at the scene on the evening of August 31. Police also found an unresponsive Vanmeter next to two soda containers, a Domino’s pizza box, and cash on the floor following the incident.
Witnesses alleged that Ungersma was still alive and had tried to call for help before Billups gunned the new father down in cold blood.
“I was talking to the pizza guy when I came out,” witness Patrick Gibson said. “I was like, ‘Bro, you all right?’”
“He was like they were trying to rob him from what he told me,” Gibson said.
While Gibson’s roommate called the police, Gibson alleged to have seen the 17-year-old girl walk up to Ungersma and shoot him four times at point blank range. Police found that Ungersma had a permit to carry a .38 S&W revolver that was in his pocket.
An autopsy report discovered that Ungersma had died from multiple gunshot wounds, while Vanmeter died from a single gunshot wound.
When police arrived at the scene, Billups was ordered to raise her hands as she dropped a 9mm handgun that was owned without a permit. Billups lived a block away from the scene of the fatal shooting, according to the Journal & Courier.
According to Ungersma’s GoFundMe page, that has more than doubled its target: “Joshua was such a great man, he saw the good and potential in everyone,” it reads. “With his passing being so tragic and unexpected, i wanted to ask for assistance with covering his funeral expenses.”
“Any help and/or encouraging words and memories are welcomed and appreciated,” the crowdfunding platform for Ungersma states. “Josh’s mother, Sheila Anderson, will be beneficiary of your generous donations. She will ensure that after funeral expenses are covered, your contributions will be put into a trust fund for Sebastian. Thank you for all your love, your caring, and your help!”
In addition to the fundraiser, the Domino’s location that Ungersma worked for pledged to donate three-quarters of their sales revenue until Friday to Ungersma’s family in light of the recent tragedy.
Billups was charged with two murder counts, one for killing Mr Ungersma and the other for causing Mr Ungersma to kill Vanmeter. Billups was also charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, armed robbery, theft, pointing a firearm, and carrying a handgun without a license. She is currently being held without bond.
